Leaky Gut & Leaky Brain
What is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut is a malabsorption problem that occurs in the bowel, the intestines, or the lining of the gut. Eighty-eight percent of our body’s immunity is found within the Gastro-Intestinal (GI) system, or “gut.” This part of our body’s immune system protects us from opportunistic bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, undigested food particles, and toxic waste from passing through the intestinal lining and into the body. When there is an imbalance in proper gut flora, external pathogens can chisel away at the physical barrier wall and create holes or leaks in the protective tissue, leading to what we know as ‘leaky gut’.
What is Leaky Brain?
Similar to how the lining of the intestinal tract becomes permeable to foreign substances, the blood- brain barrier (BBB) can also become permeable and allow chemicals, toxins and other substances to cross over into the brain. Among other things, chronic systemic cellular inflammation is one of the primary causes of leaky brain.

What’s the solution?
Your gut health is connected to everything that happens in your body. An unhealthy gut prevents nutrients from being absorbed properly. An unhealthy gut may also allow outside bacteria to infect other systems of your body. That is why a Functional Medicine treatment plan almost always begins with a plan to fixing the gut. While addressing causes of leaky gut and leaky brain may seem daunting, the good news is the gut and brain are very receptive to our protocols, and results can be achieved in short period of time.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What type of health conditions are linked to "Leaky Brain"?
When the delicate blood-brain barrier is damaged or compromised sometimes serious health conditions like anxiety, depression, memory loss, and dementia can develop.
Below is a non-comprehensive list of some of the health conditions and neurological disorders linked to altered blood-brain barrier permeability, also known as “Leaky Brain”.
- Brain Fog
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Huntington’s disease
- Seizures
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Alzheimer’s
- Dementia
What type of testing can be done to determine leaky gut and leaky brain?
An analysis of your stool (feces) is one way of testing any conditions that you could be experiencing in your digestive tract, with your immune system, and even with your brain chemistry. The stool sample is collected at home with a home test kit and then analyzed through a lab where a series of microscopic tests are done while observing color and consistency, as well as the number of substances from your body that may determine if a condition is a result of gut bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc.
Another form of testing can by collecting a small amount of urine using a home test kit we can detect levels of intestinal yeast and bacteria. Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal metabolites in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.
Vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses, can also be detected with this form of testing.
