Functional Medicine

Health starts by healing at the roots

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine seeks to identify and address the underlying ‘root’ causes of disease. Where conventional medicine views the body as a collection of independent organs, which are then divided into a variety of medical specialties; Functional Medicine views the body as one connected and integrated system and addresses the system holistically.

We make an in-depth assessment of the patient’s condition and look “upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to symptoms and illness. We consider the internal make-up of the individual – mind, body, and spirit – along with external factors such as environment, nutrition, trauma, and lifestyle.

If necessary, non-typical and specific lab testing may be recommended. This evidence-based approach typically uncovers information that has been previously missed. When the root cause is uncovered on a lab test, it instills confidence in the patient, provides clear direction of treatment for the practitioner, and becomes a valuable tool by which progress can be measured.

Functional Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine

The Conventional Approach to medicine says that if you have an inflammatory disease, then treatment should suppress the inflammation with the use of medications to shut down  the normal inflammatory process. This takes place instead of looking for and identifying what is driving the inflammation in the first place.

Conversely, Functional Medicine doesn’t shut down the inflammation, but rather, ask why the inflammation is there in the first place. Once the triggers and underlying causes – things like environmental and industrial toxins, infections, pathogens, allergens, stress, traumatic events, and poor diet – are identified, they can be addressed and removed.

Functional Medicine provides the building blocks you need for health while removing the barriers to health.

Ready to Live Your Best Life?!

Example: Nathan had heart disease

Take Nathan, a 54-year-old male with heart disease. The underlying cause of his heart disease was a systemic inflammatory condition. In his case, something in his diet was driving the inflammation. When his diet was addressed and the inflammatory foods were removed, his heart disease went away. Although the heart was the organ diagnosed with the problem, the heart wasn’t the root cause of the problem. The systemic inflammatory process was the issue.

Example: Kimberly had a toxin

Kimberly had a toxin that was causing mitochondrial dysfunction that led to brain dysfunction. By opening and supporting her detoxification pathways and eliminating the source of toxicity, her body was able to remove the toxin and resolve the brain issue.

Example: Amanda had an autoimmune issue

Amanda suffered from an inflammatory autoimmune condition. The trigger was an allergy to gluten, which caused intense joint pain. Once gluten was removed from her diet, the joint pain went away.

Example: Jax has autism

Jax is a 3-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder. An underlying fungal systemic infection was detected on his lab results. Although the infection started in the gut, the initial cause was due to a poor diet. After improving the diet, addressing imbalances in the gut microbiome, and getting rid of the systemic Candia, his ASD symptoms improved.
